WHY CHOOSE WESTERN RED CEDAR (Thuja plicata)?
Beauty: Found in Canada's Pacific Northwest, this timber is renowned for its natural and outstanding physical properties. With a uniform of fine grained texture combined with a palette of warm, mellow tones ranging from light amber to deep honey brown. Its rich colour is beautifully complimented by a natural satin lustre and a unique fragrance of a subtle aroma.
Durability: Western Red Cedar produces natural oils that act as preservatives to protect the wood from insect attacks and decay. Its ability to produce such preservatives increase with age - allowing the wood to withstand years of usage. In addition it is a very stable wood that lies flat and stays straight. Compared to other woods, it boasts a very low shrinkage value, which makes it ideal for use in high-moisture areas.
Practicality: Beauty aside, the Western Red Cedar's practicality and cellular structure creates interior air spaces that give it an insulation value higher than most woods. Buildings which feature cedar panelling and siding tend to stay warmer in the winter.
Please Note: All of the timber used by Woodpecker Joinery is supplied by Members of The Timber Federation, who recognise the responsibility and importance to protect the forests for future generations.

PRODUCT INFORMATION
Western Red Cedar All our timber has a 10 year guarantee (timbers must be keep clean and clear soil and garden rubbish etc.) We recommend re-staining with Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver every 2-3 years to prolong the life. If you asked for a natural finish, we still stain the greenhouse with the clear stain. It gives a totally clear finish; you wouldn’t necessarily know that the greenhouse has been stained just by looking at it. Over time the wood will turn a slivery grey in colour; this is just the nature of the timber and can’t be prevented. The Western Red Cedar we use in our greenhouses is air dried as it is being used externally. For greenhouses that have a hand painted finish we use kiln dried timber. If you notice any problems with the timber, take a photograph and email it to
BARRETTINE PREMIER WOOD PRESERVER We recommend re-staining every 2-3 years to protect the timber for longer. When re-staining we recommend hand protection to be used as the wood stain can irritate skin slightly. If your skin comes into contact with the stain, wash immediately with water and soap. Eye protection is also recommended. For more information regarding the recommended protective guidelines refer to the Barrettine Safety Data Sheet –VR2 Coloured Solvent Wood Preserver. If you need to order more Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver we sell 5L cans for £25 delivered - Call +44 (0) 1889 562610 for more information. BAYLISS AUTOVENTS MK7 Bayliss Autovents MK7 carry a 2 year guarantee, upheld by Bayliss Autovents. For further product information call - +44 (0) 1335 342981 or refer to - http://www.baylissautovents.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=171 For fitting instructions see attached Fixing & Setting Instructions - Bayliss Autovents MK7. The autovent is designed to open in warm conditions. The wax inside the ’Power Tube’ expands as it warms up, forcing the arm to open the roof vent. It is designed like this to prevent it opening in cold or windy conditions. In high winds it is recommended that the autovent is securely shut by screwing the knurled adjuster tight, as well as keeping all other windows and doors shut. If your autovent stops working, it can be “reset” by putting the cylinder in the fridge for a day. If you are still experiencing problems, contact Bayliss on the above number.

4mm TOUGHENED SAFETY GLASS For material information please contact the Woodpecker office on +44 (0) 1889 562610 If a piece of glass was to break, send a photograph of the broken pane and contact us on +44 (0) 1889 562610 to get exact glass sizes. SILICONE SEALANT We use a standard builders’ silicone sealant throughout the greenhouse, this is used to provide a water resistant lining where two timber sections meet, it’s also used to seal around the rebates before the 4mm toughened safety glass is fixed into place to give a water resistant seal. Standard builders’ Weather Mate is also used to line the western red cedar beading to the glass, to give a water resistant seal. We do not apply sealant underneath or around the bottom framework of the greenhouse. There is a 15mm foam membrane which prevents the greenhouse sitting directly in water; it is not a waterproofing solution.
STAINLESS STEEL FIXINGS A2 Stainless steel fixings are used throughout, as western red cedar wood has its own natural oils. These oils help to clean and preserve the wood itself but they can also lead to other metal fixings to corrode, so stainless steel fixings are used. The A2 stainless steel fixings adhere to BS EN ISO 3506 Part I and Part II. The A2 Stainless steel screws are part of the Austenitic group and have a tensile strength of 500MPa min. All stainless steel fixings have a 0.1% Carbon content. Sulphur in the fixings may be replaced with selenium. For further information regarding the fixing’s composition please call the Woodpecker office on +44 (0) 1889 562610. For further mechanical properties regarding the stainless steel fixings please call the Woodpecker office on +44 (0) 1889 562610.
DOOR AND WINDOW FURNITURE The door furniture is made from cast iron and dipped in paint to give a weather resistant finish. We recommend you oil the door and window furniture twice a year with a product like/ similar to WD-40 to prolong the life. This cleans the furniture which in turn helps prevent corrosion. All door and window furniture has a minimum 2 year life expectancy as it’s a working part.
